Thinking about learning to ride?
That’s a SPLENDID idea!
Who's this post for?
Someone who's never ridden before and thinking about it.
Why you should ride?
Independence / freedom
Even though it's the most common answer, it is the hardest to explain. Some people don't get it and they never will. I remember someone asking me why I ride and freedom was the first thing I offered. I was challenged immediately, "you can ride a horse, how is that different?" Do not concern yourself with this type of person.
I think what most riders are trying to get at is the feeling when you ride. You are exposed to the elements and that's mostly a good thing. The sun, wind, and the unobstructed view. Some people refer to car drivers as cagers for this very reason.
It's ultimately just you and your bike. If you wear a helmet, the experience is different, but not fundamentally so. No helmet means ultimate exposure. For many, when you put the helmet on the outside world seems to shut off. You are left to your thoughts.
